Gambling is designed to be entertaining, and for most people it stays that way. For some it does not. The difference is rarely obvious from inside, which is why the warning signs below are worth reading before you need them.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Betting more than you planned, or more than you can lose without it mattering
- Chasing losses — increasing stakes to recover money already gone
- Borrowing money, selling things, or using funds meant for something else
- Hiding how much you play, or lying about it when asked
- Gambling to escape stress, low mood, or boredom rather than for enjoyment
- Feeling irritable or restless when you try to cut down
- Time spent gambling encroaching on work, sleep or relationships
One of these on its own is not a diagnosis. Several of them together, over time, is a pattern worth acting on.
Tools every licensed operator provides
These are regulatory requirements in every jurisdiction we treat as major, and they are in the account settings of any licensed operator:
Deposit limits. Daily, weekly or monthly caps. Increases take effect only after a cooling-off period; decreases apply immediately. Set one before you think you need it.
Loss and wager limits. Caps on net loss or total stake within a period, which are harder to work around than deposit limits.
Session reminders. A prompt showing elapsed time and net position. Sessions run longer than people estimate, consistently.
Time out. A short break — 24 hours to six weeks. The account locks and reopens automatically.
Self-exclusion. A commitment for six months to five years or permanently. The operator must close the account, stop all marketing and refuse to reopen it before the term ends.
National self-exclusion schemes
Operator-level self-exclusion only covers that operator. National schemes cover every licensed operator in the jurisdiction at once:
| Country | Scheme |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | GAMSTOP — all UKGC-licensed online operators |
| Germany | OASIS — mandatory for all GGL-licensed operators |
| Sweden | Spelpaus — all Swedish-licensed operators |
| Denmark | ROFUS — all Danish-licensed operators |
| Ontario, Canada | AGCO self-exclusion |
| Netherlands | Cruks |
If you are outside these jurisdictions, or playing with an offshore operator, no national scheme applies. Device-level blocking software — Gamban, BetBlocker, Gamblock — works regardless of where the operator is licensed. BetBlocker is free.
Free confidential help
These organisations are independent of any operator and of this site. None of them charges, and none requires you to give a name.
- BeGambleAware — advice, self-assessment and a free 24-hour National Gambling Helpline in the UK on 0808 8020 133
- GamCare — free treatment, live chat and forums
- Gambling Therapy — free support in multiple languages, worldwide
- Gamblers Anonymous — peer support meetings, in person and online
- GamAnon — for family members and partners
If you are in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line immediately rather than a gambling helpline.
Age restriction
Every operator listed on this site is for adults only — 18 or over in most jurisdictions, 21 in some, including several US states. Underage gambling is illegal everywhere we list operators, and accounts found to belong to minors are closed with winnings forfeited.
If children use your device, set up parental controls and keep gambling apps and credentials off shared logins.
